As summer comes to an end, it’s time to pay close attention to the state of your gutters. The fall and winter seasons in Connecticut are known for heavy rain and snow and if your gutters are weakened or in need of repair, now is the time to make the necessary repairs.
We know not everyone is a Mr. Handyman when it comes to home improvement, but when gutters are failing, it will be pretty obvious even to someone who does not even know how gutters work. Some things you cannot hide and failing gutters fall into that category.
Here are a few things to keep a look out for that will let you know the gutters on your home are in need of repairs or replacement.
Water Overflow: The best time to check your gutters is when it rains. Since the purpose of rain gutters is to divert water away from the home, a rain storm will give you all the evidence you need to spot weaknesses and deficiencies. One sign that can’t be ignored is when water starts to flow over the top of the gutter lid. This often happens when a gutter is clogged and the water has nowhere else to go.
Sagging Sections: Another sure sign that your gutters are in need of fixing is when section s of the gutter channels sag. This occurs when too much weight is in the gutter and it starts to cause the gutter to buckle under the pressure. This can be due to excess water and can also happen when ice dams form during the winter. It won’t be hard to spot and this is usually where water spills out during a rain storm.
Leaks: Again, during a rain storm take a look at the gutter system and see if water is not pouring out of leaks in the channels and downspouts. Over time a gutter can start to show signs of wear with cracks and leaks and these will be apparent when the rain falls and the water starts to spring from these areas. If you notice water dripping and leaking from several spots, then that is a sure sign you have leaks and need repair work.
These are just a few of the obvious signs that a gutter system is starting to fail and is in need of repairs or replacement. There are plenty of other instances that will call for a gutter inspection but if any of the above occur at your home, contact the experts at CT Gutter and take care of the problem before it gets worse.
