When gutters are installed correctly and functioning properly, they direct rainwater and melting snow away from a roof to the downspout, where it flows down and away from the house. Properly functioning gutters can prevent damage to the roof, siding, foundation, and landscaping.
Setting the Right Pitch for Gutters
In order for gutters to work right, they need to have the appropriate slope, or pitch. This is the amount of difference in height from one end or the center of the gutter to the downspout. Gutter installers generally set the pitch for gutters at ¼ to ½ inch for every 10 feet of gutter.
The pitch of gutters needs to be precise. If the gutters are not sloped enough, water will accumulate inside them and eventually flow over the sides, where it can damage the house or wash away the landscaping. If the gutters are sloped too much, they will not be able to hold as much water as they should. During a heavy rainstorm, water will run quickly toward the downspout but will not be able to drain fast enough. This can cause water to splash over the sides. Gutters that are pitched too sharply will also not appear right to someone looking at the house. This can detract from the home’s appearance.
Location of Downspouts
Gutters often have downspouts in more than one location at the corners of the house. A downspout is usually installed for at least every 30 feet of gutters. The gutters should slope toward the nearest downspout. If the roof is 50 feet long, for example, the gutters should be sloped from a high point in the center down toward downspouts on either end. Additional downspouts may also be needed if the roofline bends.
